Background
The season follows Izuku Midoriya and his classmates through their Hero Work-Studies, where they take on the Shie Hassaikai group to stop it creating a Quirk-Destroying Drug and to save the little girl at the centre of the scheme. Meanwhile two U.A. students who failed their previous exam attend a special Hero License Course, U.A. holds its annual School Festival, for which Class 1-A stages a dance performance with a live band to ease public doubts about the school, and the new hero rankings are revealed shortly after one of the world's greatest Heroes is forced to retire.
Funimation licensed the season for North America and premiered the first episode with its English dub at Anime Expo on July 6, 2019; Crunchyroll and Hulu simulcast it outside Asia while FunimationNow streamed the Simuldub. The dub premiered on Adult Swim's Toonami block on November 9, 2019, and several episodes were delayed by schedule disruption and the COVID-19 pandemic, so the run ended on June 28, 2020, instead of May.
The first fourteen episodes use "Polaris" by Blue Encount as opening and "Kōkai no Uta" by Sayuri as ending, followed by "Starmarker" by Kana-Boon and "Shout Baby" by Ryokuōshoku Shakai; Kyoka Jiro, sung by Chrissy Costanza, performs the insert songs "Each Goal" in episode 19 and "Hero too" in episode 23. Toho released the season on DVD and Blu-ray in six volumes between January 22 and August 19, 2020, and Funimation in two North American volumes on September 29, 2020, and February 16, 2021, with a complete Blu-ray on February 15, 2022.
