Seventh Umbral Calamity
Bahamut's escape from Dalamud, the disaster that ended the original Final Fantasy XIV.
The Seventh Umbral Calamity is the devastating event that ended the original version of Final Fantasy XIV; A Realm Reborn is set in Eorzea five years later. Because each earlier Calamity was tied to one of the six elements, the Sixth Astral Era had been expected to last forever, but the Garlean Empire triggered a seventh.
Lore & Background
Garlean scientists working on Project Meteor weaponised the lesser moon Dalamud. At the Battle of Carteneau Flats in Mor Dhona, Dalamud revealed itself as an ancient Allagan prison for the primal dragon Bahamut, and his escape triggered the Calamity.
The Warriors of Light who fought there vanished, and the player character, an adventurer of the Seventh Umbral Era, is favourably compared to them. In Shadowbringers the Scions avert an Eighth Umbral Calamity, which in G'raha Tia's timeline was caused by a Light-supercharged Black Rose.
