Final Fantasy II follows the warrior Firion and his allies as they join a rebellion against the expanding Palamecian Empire. The Empire, ruled by a powerful mage who summons monsters from Hell, has conquered or destroyed its neighbours, including the kingdom of Kashuan and the dragoon homeland of Deist.
Lore & Background
The rebellion is headquartered at Fynn Castle, and the Empire's attack that destroys the castle and its town is the game's inciting incident. The four main characters are Firion, his childhood friend Maria, Guy, who was raised by wolves, and Maria's brother Leon, a temporary ally of the Empire whom the party meets as a dark knight.
The party eventually enters Palamecia's castle and confronts Leon, and the castle transforms into Pandaemonium, the capital of Hell. Some reviewers saw the plot as mirroring Star Wars, with an orphan joining a rebellion against an empire building a massive ship with a captive princess inside.
