Materia

The orbs that give Final Fantasy VII's characters their spells, summons and abilities.

Materia are the main method of customising characters in Final Fantasy VII. The orbs can be added to equipment to give a character new magic spells, monsters to summon, commands, statistical upgrades and other benefits, and they are managed from the menu screen.

Lore & Background

Materia level up through their own experience point system and can be combined for different effects. The system was proposed to give more customisation than earlier games: battles no longer depended on characters with innate roles, because Materia could be reconfigured between fights. Shinra mass-produces materia from crystallised Mako energy, and the young ninja Yuffie Kisaragi is a skilled Materia thief.

Two unique Materia drive the plot. Sephiroth intends to use the Black Materia to cast Meteor; the party retrieves it, but he manipulates Cloud into surrendering it, and does so again when Cloud confronts him as he gathers Jenova's cells. When Sephiroth kills Aerith he leaves behind the White Materia.
