Kefka's World of Ruin

The apocalypse that splits Final Fantasy VI in two.

An apocalyptic event in the middle of Final Fantasy VI transforms the planet from the World of Balance into the World of Ruin, its withering landmasses fractured into numerous islands around a larger continent. The developers split the game into two halves because they were tired of the usual scenario of a hero narrowly saving the world.

Lore & Background

In the World of Ruin, Celes is led first to Sabin, found holding up the crumbling wreck of a mansion in Tzen after an attack by Kefka's Light of Judgment, and Edgar appears disguised as a mercenary thief named Gerad, an anagram of his name, to get back into his sunken castle. Shadow can be recruited permanently if the player waited for him before leaping to the airship.

The game ends with the group escaping Kefka's tower as it collapses and flying away as the world rejuvenates. Joe Juba of Game Informer called the split between the two worlds one of the game's distinguishing features for its non-linear, freeform second half.
