Eorzea
The region of Hydaelyn where Final Fantasy XIV is set, divided among four city-states.
Eorzea is the region of the world Hydaelyn in which Final Fantasy XIV is set. Its four main city-states are Gridania in the forested Black Shroud, the trading sultanate of Ul'dah in arid Thanalan, the thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa on the island of Vylbrand, and the isolationist theocracy of Ishgard in snowy Coerthas.
Lore & Background
Eorzean history alternates between prosperous Astral eras and disastrous Umbral eras, each brought on by a Calamity. The First Umbral Era ended the age of gods, and the Twelve, Eorzea's guardian deities, withdrew from direct contact with mortals. Under the Allagan Empire of the Third Astral Era, technology reached its peak.
Reader's Guide
Eorzea borders the Garlean Empire, which has conquered the two continents to the east and annexed Ala Mhigo. Other peoples include tribes such as the Ixali and Kobolds and the scholars of Sharlayan.
The Garlean Empire set off the Seventh Umbral Calamity with Project Meteor, in which Legatus Nael van Darnus tried to crash the moon Dalamud into Eorzea. The Eorzean Alliance reunited, but at the Battle of Carteneau Flats Dalamud opened to free the primal dragon Bahamut. Louisoix Leveilleur sent the adventurers beyond the reach of time before sacrificing himself.
