The Shadowbringers Journey
The Warrior of Light is summoned to the First to slay the Lightwardens.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers opens as the Warrior of Light and Tataru approach the Crystal Tower, hoping to restore the Scions, when a mysterious voice, the Crystal Exarch, summons the Warrior to the First, a world facing apocalypse. Comrades accidentally trapped there join the fight, as does Emet-Selch, an immortal Ascian who wants to use the First's apocalypse to restore his god Zodiark.
Lore & Background
Slaying a Lightwarden infects the slayer with its Light and creates another, but Hydaelyn's Blessing forestalls this. The Ascians, Zodiark's servants, trigger Calamities on the Source to Rejoin its shards, and Emet-Selch, who founded the Garlean Empire as Solus zos Galvus, accelerates his plan to destroy the First.
The Exarch is revealed as G'raha Tia, sent across time and worlds with the Crystal Tower from a timeline where a Light-supercharged Black Rose caused the Eighth Umbral Calamity. Emet-Selch reveals that Hydaelyn and Zodiark are primals made by his people, the Ancients. With the First saved and the Eighth Calamity averted, the Scions and G'raha return to the Crystarium to find a way home.
