Eidolons

One of the series' names for its summoned creatures, used in IV, IX, XIII and Type-0.

Eidolons is one of several names the Final Fantasy series has used for its summoned creatures, alongside Espers, Guardian Forces, Aeons, Astrals, Primals and Eikons. Summons have taken either core roles in the story or lesser roles as tools for the player characters.

Lore & Background

In Final Fantasy IV the Feymarch is the home of the Eidolons, where Rydia grows into a young woman. In Final Fantasy IX Eiko and Garnet summon eidolons; Madain Sari was home to a near-extinct race of horned summoners who conjure them, and Queen Brahne extracts Garnet's eidolons and uses Odin to destroy Cleyra, supplied by Kuja with the knowledge to use them.

In Final Fantasy Type-0 Eidolons are dismissed after a limited time in battle. They were not originally controlled in real time, but tests with real-time commands during Ifrit's development impressed director Hajime Tabata enough to make them controllable.
