The genus *Glyphis*, part of the requiem shark family, is known as the river shark. These sharks inhabit rivers and coastal areas across parts of Southeast Asia and Australia. Although the bull shark is sometimes called a "river shark" or "Ganges shark," it is a different species from those in the *Glyphis* genus, even though both can be found living in the same river systems.

Taxonomically, the true number of *Glyphis* species may be higher than currently recognized, but studying them is difficult because they are secretive. Distribution & Habitat

The blacktip reef shark ranges across nearshore tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. In the Indian Ocean, its distribution stretches from South Africa through the Red Sea, encompassing Madagascar, Mauritius, and the Seychelles, then continuing eastward along the Indian subcontinent to Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands, and the Maldives. In the Pacific, it is documented from southern China and the Philippines through Indonesia, northern Australia, and New Caledonia, as well as scattered oceanic island groups including the Marshall, Gilbert, Society, and Hawaiian Islands.
