Zetsu

Background

Black Zetsu began as a shadow-like parasite created by Kaguya to manipulate her grandson Indra and his descendants down the generations until one of them awakened a Rinnegan and could free her. He succeeded with Madara, whom he tricked into believing he had created the entity himself. White Zetsu came from the army Kaguya assembled against her kin, humans turned into drones after being absorbed by the Ten Tails during her earlier Infinite Tsukuyomi.

The two halves live in symbiosis, the black half sometimes arguing with his easygoing host. As an extension of the Shinju, White Zetsu can sink into the ground or plants to travel quickly and uses spores to make clones of himself or anyone he touches, which makes him useful to the Akatsuki as a spy and as a way to dispose of bodies. Another White Zetsu taken from the Gedo Statue, first called Guruguru for the spiral pattern on his body and later named Tobi, served as an exosuit for Obito while he adjusted to his new body.

After Sasuke kills White Zetsu in the Fourth Great Ninja War, Black Zetsu hides, later merging with Obito to force him to revive Madara. Once the Eye of the Moon Plan runs its course, he reveals his true identity, fuses with Madara to turn him into a vessel for Kaguya, and admits his part in the long conflict between the Senju and Uchiha. Naruto tears him from his creator by severing Kaguya's arm and, as she is sealed again, throws him into the forming moon. Kishimoto made Zetsu half black and half white to stress his split personality; Nobuo Tobita voices him in Japanese and Travis Willingham in the English Shippuden anime.
