The Gedo Statue is the vessel into which the Akatsuki seal the tailed beasts they capture. Nagato, as the public figurehead leader of the Akatsuki, wishes to capture all the tailed beasts sealed into various people around the shinobi world. After acquiring and sealing most of the beasts within the Gedo Statue, Nagato's advisor Obito Uchiha, who controls the Akatsuki in reality, advises him to capture the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox named Kurama, sealed inside Naruto Uzumaki. Nagato's link with the Gedo Statue leaves him crippled, but he finds a way to overcome this weakness by remotely controlling the corpses of deceased people as the Six Paths of Pain.

In Their Own Story

The Gedo Statue is central to the Akatsuki's plan to capture all tailed beasts. Nagato, using the alias Pain, leads the Akatsuki to force the world into peace using any means necessary. The statue is used to seal the beasts, and Nagato's connection to it causes him physical strain. After Nagato's death, Tobi desecrates Nagato's resting place to acquire the Rinnegan, which Madara later reclaims once fully resurrected. During the war, Nagato is reanimated by Kabuto Yakushi and sent to battle Naruto and Killer Bee, though he is eventually sealed and sent back to the afterlife.
