The Gedo Statue is a colossal stone entity that serves as the dormant vessel for the Ten-Tails, the progenitor of all chakra. The Akatsuki seal the tailed beasts they capture inside it; once most of them are sealed, Obito Uchiha advises Nagato to capture Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Fox inside Naruto. The statue is used by the Akatsuki to seal the tailed beasts they capture, as part of their goal to create a new world free from war.

The Gedo Statue is the vessel into which the Akatsuki seal the tailed beasts they capture. Nagato, as the public figurehead leader of the Akatsuki, wishes to capture all the tailed beasts sealed into various people around the shinobi world. After acquiring and sealing most of the beasts within the Gedo Statue, Nagato's advisor Obito Uchiha, who controls the Akatsuki in reality, advises him to capture the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox named Kurama, sealed inside Naruto Uzumaki. Nagato's link with the Gedo Statue leaves him crippled, but he finds a way to overcome this weakness by remotely controlling the corpses of deceased people as the Six Paths of Pain.
Reader's Guide
The Gedo Statue is used by the Akatsuki to seal tailed beasts. Nagato, as the leader, controls the statue through his Rinnegan. The process of sealing beasts within the statue is part of the plan to create a new world free from war. However, the statue's use comes at a cost: Nagato is crippled from his link with the Gedo Statue, forcing him to remotely control the Six Paths of Pain. It is the centrepiece of the Eye of the Moon Plan of Obito and Madara: fed with the Tailed Beasts, the statue turns back into the Ten-Tails.
