Ten-Tails

Lore & Background

For millennia, the beast's dormant body lay sealed within the moon, its chakra dispersed across the earth as nine distinct tailed beasts. In the modern era, the architects of the Eye of the Moon Plan—first Obito Uchiha, then Madara Uchiha—orchestrated a desperate gambit to reunite these fragments. Once fully formed, the Ten-Tails transcends physical limitations, wielding the power to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi: a moon-wide genjutsu that traps all humanity in a hallucinated paradise while their real bodies are drained of life energy to feed the growing God Tree.

Reader's Guide

The history of the Ten-Tails is the origin story of chakra itself. It began when Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who had eaten the Divine Tree's fruit, merged with the tree to take back the chakra her sons had inherited. Her sons Hagoromo and Hamura fought the monster. Hagoromo sealed it inside himself, becoming the first jinchūriki; before he died he divided its chakra into the nine tailed beasts and sealed its body in what became the Moon.

For centuries, these beasts roamed freely or were sealed within human vessels known as Jinchūriki. The Ten-Tails remained a myth until the late stages of the Fourth Great Ninja War, when villainous factions sought to reunite the scattered chakra of all nine beasts. Its ultimate objective was to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, an eye technique that would trap every living being in a dream world, effectively ending conflict by removing free will. In the end Team 7 seals Kaguya, who reverts into the Ten-Tails as she is sealed.
