Rinnegan

The legendary eye of the Sage of Six Paths.

The Rinnegan is a legendary eye technique tied to Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths. Black Zetsu spent generations steering Indra's descendants so that one of them would manifest it.

Lore & Background

Madara Uchiha awakens the Rinnegan late in life using Hashirama Senju's DNA and transplants his eyes into the young Nagato to keep them for his own revival. With them Nagato controls six animated corpses, the Six Paths of Pain, and in the end performs the Rinne Rebirth, which revives the recently dead and costs him his life. Obito later takes the eyes and uses them to read the Uchiha stone tablet.

Reader's Guide

During the Fourth Great Ninja War Sasuke Uchiha receives a Rinnegan in his left eye from Hagoromo's spirit and uses it to break the Infinite Tsukuyomi; he loses it years later to Momoshiki's attack through Boruto's body. Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki himself carries Rinnegan in his palms, which absorb and release ninjutsu.
