Background
For the first half of the series Kankuro is often at odds with Gaara, though he holds his tongue for fear of being killed. In Part II, once Gaara begins to share his dreams and motives, Kankuro becomes fiercely protective, lashing out at anyone who speaks ill of him and readily risking his life when Gaara is kidnapped.
A talented puppeteer, he normally fights with the bladed attack puppet Crow and the trapping puppet Black Ant in combination, and also carries the large puppet Salamander for defence and offence together. After their maker destroys those puppets, he takes Sasori's lifeless body, Scorpion, and modifies it as an ordinary puppet. During the Fourth Great Ninja War he defeats the reanimated Sasori, breaks Kabuto's hold over him, and is entrusted with the Mother and Father puppets.
In the epilogue he still serves as Gaara's bodyguard. Yasuyuki Kase voices him in Japanese; Michael Lindsay voiced him in English until Doug Erholtz replaced him in 2013, a year after Lindsay retired.
