Gaara is a central figure in the shinobi world, originating as a feared antagonist before becoming one of its most respected leaders. Made the vessel of the One-Tail Shukaku before he was born, he grew up isolated and feared; his mother died giving birth to him.

Lore & Background

After his battle with Naruto during the invasion of Konoha, Gaara's outlook changed and he resolved to help others. During Part II he succeeds his late father as Sunagakure's Fifth Kazekage.

Reader's Guide

Gaara hails from the Hidden Sand Village, eventually rising to become its Fifth Kazekage. He is introduced during the Chunin Exams and becomes Kazekage in Part II. His personality shifted dramatically; early on, he was defined by isolation and murderous intent due to the One-Tail beast sealed within him. Later, he embraced empathy and leadership, inspired by Naruto Uzumaki's influence. His older siblings Temari and Kankuro later serve under him as his bodyguards. In Part II the Akatsuki members Deidara and Sasori capture him and extract Shukaku, which kills him; Chiyo, Sasori's grandmother, revives him.

Did You Know?

Gaara's sand moves on its own to attack whoever threatens him, which made the villagers fear him as a child.
His father, the Fourth Kazekage Rasa, had Chiyo seal Shukaku into him while he was still in the womb, and his mother died giving birth to him.
