Background
Kishimoto designed Mitsuki with snake-like features, especially his eyes, as hints to his parentage. He originally had a shoulder-length bob, but the author changed it to a short white hairstyle to make him more appealing. Mitsuki was given a kimono with long sleeves that hide his hands, making his intentions difficult to read, and a ninja tool pouch longer than regular ones on the fastener of his sash. Director Hiroyuki Yamashita found him a gentle character in the Boruto film and said he only felt Mitsuki might be intriguing after seeing the scene of his true form at the first screening.
He first appears as a transfer student training to become a ninja. By Boruto: Naruto the Movie he is a genin teamed with Boruto Uzumaki and Sarada Uchiha under Konohamaru Sarutobi, taking part in the Chunin Exams, and in the post-credits scene he confesses to his teammates that he is the son of the former criminal Orochimaru, shocking Sarada but not Boruto. Naruto Gaiden: The Road Illuminated by the Full Moon reveals that he is Orochimaru's artificial creation and shows him leaving his master for Konohagakure to find Boruto, whom he calls his "sun".
The anime shows his entry into the academy and his friendship with Boruto, a trip to Kirigakure to help stop a rebellion by seven swordsmen, and an anime-only arc in which he seems to defect, travelling with the Fabrications, artificial humans from the Stone Village planning a coup, until he is revealed as a spy and defeats their leader Ku. He is playable in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. Ryuichi Kijima, asked by the staff to sound emotionless, voices him in Japanese and Robbie Daymond in English.
