Background
Kishimoto felt pressure when he created Sarada because he thought he lacked experience in drawing female characters. He also worried about how the franchise's primarily male audience would respond to a female lead character, and read several books about women's traits, in the end giving those characteristics to Chocho Akimichi so that the comic Chocho would balance Sarada's dark story. He imagined the character as a female version of her father, Sasuke Uchiha, portraying her as slightly dark but strong-hearted rather than cute. He incorporated elements from Sakura into her characterisation and clothing, and her glasses were meant partly to hide how much her eyes resemble Sasuke's.
In the spin-off she searches for her estranged father and, noticing that Sasuke's former ally Karin wears glasses like hers, wrongly suspects Karin is her real mother. The excitement of finally seeing Sasuke awakens her Sharingan, but her first impression of him is poor. The Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki, helps her understand that family is not a matter of blood, and Sakura confirms she is her biological mother; Karin explains she was Sakura's midwife while the couple were travelling. Before leaving again Sasuke gives her the same forehead poke he once gave Sakura. Sarada has also inherited Sakura's natural chakra control, concentrating it in her fists for devastating strength, and her mother's "Cha!" verbal tic. Admiring Naruto, she resolves to become Hokage one day.
In the film Boruto: Naruto the Movie she is a low-ranking Genin who forms a team with Boruto Uzumaki, Mitsuki and their teacher Konohamaru Sarutobi. In the ninja examination to become Chunin she breaks through a genjutsu with her Sharingan, then defeats her adversary Tarui by combining the Sharingan with her chakra control, though the team fails the final exam; her father protects her from a falling wall when Momoshiki and Kinshiki Otsutsuki attack. For Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Ikemoto redesigned her with a masculine black jacket of Boruto's brand, worn so that she will not forget him. Kokoro Kikuchi voices her in Japanese; in English Laura Bailey played her in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and Cherami Leigh has voiced her since.
