Background

Bandai Namco announced the sequel in an issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in September 2019. The Japanese launch came on March 12, 2020, on Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One; the rest of the world got the same platforms a day later, and a Google Stadia version arrived on February 15, 2022. Further characters arrived as paid downloadable content, Hawks first among them, and a free update in June 2020 added English voice-overs.

Screen Rant's Spencer Still liked the characters and the combat system but found the game very similar to its predecessor. At IGN, Suriel Vazquez praised the roster and its special abilities while complaining that the combat system skipped some finer details. Hardcore Gamer's Jeremy Peeples welcomed the visuals and the gameplay improvements over the first game, though he thought newcomers to the main series would struggle to understand it. Nintendo Life's Dom Reseigh-Lincoln enjoyed the story mode and customization options but faulted the combat and the camera controls.

First-week sales came to roughly 24,625 units: 18,250 on Switch and 6,375 on PlayStation 4.
