Juventus had won three previous UEFA Cup finals (1977, 1990, 1993). Parma had contested European finals in 1993 (win) and 1994 (defeat) before this final. Juventus played their home leg at the San Siro in Milan due to difficulties with their own stadium landlord.

The first leg at Parma's Stadio Ennio Tardini ended 1–0 to Parma. The second leg at the San Siro finished 1–1, giving Parma a 2–1 aggregate win. Dino Baggio scored in both legs; Gianluca Vialli scored for Juventus in the second leg.
