The 1985 Intercontinental Cup victory was part of a period of sustained success under Giovanni Trapattoni. Juventus had already won the European Champions' Cup in 1984–85 and the European Super Cup in 1984, and by 1985 they had also won the UEFA Cup (1976–77) and the Cup Winners' Cup (1983–84). This made them the first club to complete a clean sweep of all five major European and international club competitions.
