Flamengo was founded on 17 November 1895 by a group of rowers. The club's football team was established in 1911 after a group of dissatisfied players from Fluminense joined Flamengo. The first official football match was played on 3 May 1912, a 16–2 victory over Mangueira. Flamengo's traditional uniform features red and black striped shirts with white shorts, and red and black striped socks. The club has typically played home matches at Maracanã Stadium since 1950.
