Lore & Background

The best-known meeting came in 1966, when Bangu won its second state championship by beating Flamengo 3–0 at the Maracanã in front of more than 120,000 fans. The game is remembered for a big brawl started by Flamengo's players, after which several players were sent off.

Flamengo's first match at the Rua Paysandu ground, on 31 October 1915, was a Campeonato Carioca game against Bangu. In 1985 a tackle by Bangu defender Márcio Nunes left Zico with a serious knee injury a month after his return to Flamengo.
