Flamengo vs Atlético-MG

An interstate rivalry forged in the controversial 1980 and 1981 meetings.

Flamengo's interstate rivalry with Atlético Mineiro of Minas Gerais grew out of a run of controversial meetings in the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores in the 1980s, and is considered one of the biggest interstate rivalries in Brazilian football. The clubs first met in 1929, but until national competitions began in 1959 their games were friendlies.

Lore & Background

In 1980 Atlético, after the best record in the early stages of the Brasileirão, lost the final to Flamengo; three Atlético players were sent off, including Reinaldo, who had scored twice. The next year Flamengo knocked Atlético out of the Copa Libertadores in a playoff that was stopped after 37 minutes when five Atlético players had been sent off.

Later meetings include the 2014 Copa do Brasil semi-final, when Atlético came back from 0–3 down on aggregate to win 4–3, and the 2022 Supercopa do Brasil, which Atlético won 8–7 on penalties after a 2–2 draw with Flamengo. Atlético's home attendance record outside derbies, 115,142, was set in a friendly against Flamengo at the Mineirão in 1980.
