Lore & Background
Palmeiras were the defending champions. The top six teams and the Copa do Brasil winners qualified for the next Copa Libertadores, the next six for the Copa Sudamericana, and the bottom four were relegated to Série B.
With the league title following the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo under Jorge Jesus became the first Brazilian club to win the league and the continental title in the same season since Santos in 1963.
