Flamengo vs Santos
The 1983 league final at a packed Maracanã, and Pelé's Santos as Flamengo's benchmark.
Flamengo played Santos in the 1983 Campeonato Brasileiro final at the Maracanã before an official crowd of 155,523, with some estimates above 160,000, and won the title. In 2000 Santos knocked Flamengo out of the Copa do Brasil 8–2 on aggregate.
Lore & Background
Pelé's Santos is the yardstick for Flamengo's greatest seasons. The 1981 Intercontinental Cup made Flamengo the first Brazilian world champions since that Santos side, and in 2019 Flamengo became only the second Brazilian club, after Santos in 1962, to win the state championship, the national league and the Copa Libertadores in one season.
