Lore & Background
Flamengo won the championship for the first time in 1914, two years after their football team was founded, and retained it in 1915. The club has also won it three years running several times, including 1999, 2000 and 2001, its fourth such tri-championship.
Reader's Guide
The competition is usually split into stages: the Taça Guanabara, the Taça Rio and the finals, in which the winners of the two stages meet over two legs. The big four clubs are seeded, two in each group.
