Lore & Background

Zico scored his last Maracanã goal in 1989, setting the stadium record of 333 goals. On 19 July 1992, during the second match of the Série A final between Botafogo and Flamengo, an upper stand collapsed, killing three spectators and injuring 50; the stadium later became all-seated.

During a nine-month closure in 2005 and 2006 Flamengo played at Volta Redonda's Estádio Raulino de Oliveira and Portuguesa's Estádio Luso Brasileiro. The stadium reopened in January 2007 with 87,000 seats and was rebuilt again from 2010 for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
