Sport Club Corinthians Paulista is a professional sports club from the Tatuapé district of São Paulo, best known for a men's football side that competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and the Campeonato Paulista Série A1. With more than 30 million supporters, it ranks second in Brazil for fan numbers, trailing only Flamengo, which makes every meeting between the two a clash of the country's largest crowds. Corinthians has collected seven national championships, four Copa do Brasil trophies and a record 31 São Paulo state titles. Abroad, it lifted the first FIFA Club World Championship in 2000 and won the competition again in 2012, the same year it claimed its first Copa Libertadores.

Background
The club traces its birth to 1 September 1910, when five São Paulo Railway workers from the Bom Retiro neighbourhood met on Rua José Paulino and agreed to form a team. A day earlier they had watched a touring London side, Corinthian F.C., and they borrowed its name. Miguel Battaglia was elected the first president. Corinthians lost its opening match to União da Lapa but quickly built a following, entered the Liga Paulista and took its first state title in 1914. The crest, introduced in 1939 by painter and former player Francisco Rebolo, places the São Paulo flag in a shield with two oars and an anchor, a reminder of early rowing success. After a 23-year wait for a major trophy ended in 1977, the club won its first Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1990 by beating São Paulo in the final.
