Background

The player is Desmond Miles, a modern-day man who uses a machine called the Animus to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Desmond has been kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, which wants information hidden in those memories.

Altaïr loses his rank of Master Assassin after a failed mission to recover a Piece of Eden from the Templars. To win back his honour he must find and kill nine targets across the cities of Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus.

Play is built on combat, stealth and parkour, including social stealth, where crowds hide the player from guards. Critics praised the storytelling, visuals and originality, while most complaints were about repetitive gameplay.
