Background
The main plot runs from 1752 to 1760, before and during the French and Indian War, and follows Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irish American privateer and Assassin. Disillusioned with the Brotherhood's methods, he defects to the Templars and helps them hunt down his former comrades.
In the modern framing story, the player is an employee of Abstergo Industries who uncovers secrets of the Assassin-Templar conflict while trying to repair the company's servers. Play closely follows Black Flag, mixing naval exploration on Shay's ship, the Morrigan, with third-person exploration on land across the North Atlantic, the River Valley and New York City.
Reception was mixed: critics liked the twist of playing as a Templar, the story, the protagonist and the naval combat, but faulted its short length, its lack of new ideas and how much it resembled Black Flag.
