Background

Once the prodigy of the Uchiha clan, Itachi is presented as a villain for most of the story. Early on he is held solely responsible for wiping out his entire clan and family, sparing only Sasuke, supposedly to test his own abilities.

Around the time of his death his villainy is softened. He is shown to have had help from Obito Uchiha in the killings, and Part II reveals that he carried out the massacre on the orders of Konoha's leadership to head off an Uchiha coup. He dies during his battle with Sasuke from an unnamed illness.

Kabuto later resurrects him during the Fourth Great Ninja War, but Itachi breaks free of Kabuto's control and, fighting alongside Sasuke, defeats him. Hideo Ishikawa voices Itachi in Japanese; in English Skip Stellrecht voiced him in episodes 29 and 30 before Crispin Freeman took over for every later appearance.
