Background
Ultra Rumble is a third-person battle royale that also borrows from multiplayer online battle arena games, playable online against other players or offline against CPU opponents. Matches hold up to 24 players, split by default into eight teams of three, with duo and solo modes added in later updates. Players fight across a periodically shrinking map until one team remains; each character has three Quirk skills with cooldowns that scale with their strength plus a unique action, such as Izuku carrying a downed teammate to safety, and the map yields cards that upgrade Quirk skills and potions that raise the damage-blocking "Guard Point" gauge.
Playable characters fall into five groups, Assault, Rapid, Strike, Support and Technical, by playstyle. Six are unlocked from the start, with more characters and cosmetics earned through a gacha system or the "Special License" battle pass, which levels up through play or microtransactions, and occasional "Rental Tickets" let players try a locked character for a few matches. Every character's voice actor reprises the anime role in both Japanese and English.
The game was announced in Weekly Shōnen Jump on January 13, 2022, with Byking, developer of both One's Justice games, returning; producer Aoba Miyazaki told Anime News Network that the team hoped the characters' different fighting styles would make for a distinctive battle royale. Closed betas ran from February 2 to 6 and August 17 to 21, 2022, and an open beta from May 25 to June 1, 2023, before the full release on September 28, 2023, since followed by seasons every two months adding characters, modes, mechanics, stages and cosmetics. Josh Tolentino of Siliconera called the closed beta "rough and unbalanced" but full of potential, James Birks of TheXboxHub gave the release 4/5 stars while criticising the small villain roster and lack of modes, and the game passed seven million downloads in its first month and ten million by February 8, 2024.
