Espers

Final Fantasy VI's summons, enslaved magical beings whose remains become magicite.

Espers are Final Fantasy VI's version of the series' summons: powerful monstrous beings, many recurring across the series, such as Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut and Odin. The game's setting and plot revolve around them and their remains, called magicite.

Lore & Background

In the War of the Magi, three quarrelling entities known as the Warring Triad turned innocent humans into enslaved magical beings, the Espers, to use as soldiers. Realising their wrong, the Triad freed the Espers and sealed their own power inside three stone statues, and the Espers sealed both the statues and themselves away from the human realm.

As the game opens, the Empire has exploited the weakening barrier between the two realms to capture several Espers and uses them as a power source for Magitek, which combines magic with machinery and infuses humans with magic. At Vector the dying Espers choose to give their lives to the party by becoming magicite. Final Fantasy XII also uses the name Esper for its summons, some derived from earlier final bosses such as Chaos and Zeromus.
