Kuja Unveils His Origin
Garland's pawn learns his lifespan is limited and that Zidane was made to replace him.
Kuja, the antagonist of Final Fantasy IX, is an arms dealer and a pawn of Garland, an elderly Terran tasked with saving his world. He supplies Queen Brahne of Alexandria with black mages and the knowledge to use eidolons.
Lore & Background
When Garnet and Eiko summon a powerful eidolon to defend Alexandria, Kuja tries to steal it to kill his master, but Garland arrives and destroys it. Kuja had earlier sought the eidolon Alexander to kill Garland, who prevented it, driving Kuja to kidnap the summoner Eiko Carol and extract her eidolons.
After Zidane's party defeats Garland at Pandemonium, Kuja confronts and defeats him. Before dying, Garland reveals that Kuja has a limited lifespan in any case, and that Zidane was designed to be his replacement.
