Graystripe

A ThunderClan cat who rose from apprentice to warrior alongside Fireheart.

Graystripe began as the ThunderClan apprentice Graypaw, training under Lionheart. He first appears in Into the Wild, the first of the six original novels, when he runs into the house cat Rusty, and he becomes Firepaw's close friend. Graystripe forms a strong bond with Firepaw and fellow apprentice Ravenpaw, and together they help Ravenpaw escape Tigerclaw's murder plot by leading him to a barn already occupied by Barley. After Frostfur's kits are stolen by ShadowClan, Firepaw leads the rescue party that brings them back.

Bluestar then makes both apprentices warriors: Graypaw becomes Graystripe and Firepaw becomes Fireheart. Fire and Ice opens with Graystripe and Fireheart keeping the traditional silent vigil that follows their promotion. In Fire and Ice, they are tasked with locating WindClan, which had been driven out of their territory. During a hunting patrol, Graystripe chases a vole onto thin ice and almost drowns in the river, where the RiverClan warrior Silverstream rescues him.

Reader's Guide

Graystripe, ThunderClan, warrior. He is the apprentice of Lionheart and the close friend of Firepaw and Ravenpaw. His relationships are defined by loyalty and shared action; he bonds with Firepaw through their first fight in Rusty's backyard and later through their joint rescue of Ravenpaw and Frostfur's kits. Graystripe is a supporting warrior across the six original novels, from Into the Wild to The Darkest Hour: he befriends a former housecat, helps a friend escape a murderer, and falls in love with Silverstream of RiverClan, with whom he has two kits, Feathertail and Stormfur.

He continues to appear in Fire and Ice, where he and Fireheart locate and bring home WindClan after they were driven out of their territory. His near-drowning during a hunting patrol in Fire and Ice leads to his meeting Silverstream, and their love across Clan lines is against the warrior code. He later serves as ThunderClan's deputy, loses the post after humans capture him, and returns to the Clans with his new mate, Millie.
