Background

His frustration grows as Rick's leadership comes to dominate the community, and it boils over when Rick murders his close friend Pete Anderson. Nicholas quickly tries to form a coup with his fellow Alexandria citizens and viciously beats Glenn, but Rick dissolves the coup and Nicholas apologizes. From then on he becomes more accepting of Rick and grows into his most trusted ally, taking part in his plans.

During one of the Saviors' supply trips to Alexandria, Nicholas, Rick, Heath and Holly try to kill Negan. Shot in the arm by hidden Saviors, he is lined up to be executed with Negan's bat unless the citizens throw Carl over the wall; when they refuse and Negan turns to Rick, Nicholas pleads for his life. This only angers Negan, who says he will kill Nicholas and spare the rest if Rick, Holly or Heath tell him to; Heath answers that Nicholas is just scared. Negan starts singing to choose his victim, and the group is rescued by Jesus.

After the Saviors attack Alexandria he tells Rick he wants to leave with his family for their safety, and Rick announces that the whole town is relocating to the Hilltop Colony. Nicholas fights in the defense of the Hilltop when Negan attacks it and helps carry Rick into Gregory's mansion after Dwight's arrow hits him, but a Savior slashes his back with an infected knife. Burning with fever, he dies of the wound with Paula at his side.
