Character biography

Little background is given about T-Dog prior to the walker epidemic, though Glenn states in the episode 'Say the Word' that T-Dog helped a local church by driving its van and assisting elderly congregation members. Theodore 'T-Dog' Douglas is a muscular and well-intentioned man, yet somewhat clumsy. In the episode 'Guts', he is among survivors scavenging in Atlanta. On a department store roof, Merle Dixon beats T-Dog while attempting to assert leadership.

Rick Grimes subdues Merle and handcuffs him to a pipe, leaving T-Dog to watch him. During the group's escape, T-Dog accidentally drops the handcuff key down a drainpipe, leaving Merle trapped. T-Dog tries to apologize, but Merle insists it was intentional. T-Dog padlocks a chain to the roof access door to keep walkers from killing Merle.

The group escapes in a box truck. In 'Tell It to the Frogs', the group returns to camp, where Merle's brother Daryl becomes enraged upon learning Merle was abandoned. Rick, Glenn, and T-Dog return to Atlanta at Daryl's insistence but find Merle gone, his amputated hand left behind. In 'Vatos', they search for Merle and a bag of guns; Glenn is captured by another survivor group.

Rick, Daryl, and T-Dog confront the group, recover Glenn, and return to camp. That evening, a walker horde overruns the camp. In 'Wildfire', T-Dog helps clean up, and the group agrees to seek shelter at the CDC. In 'TS-19', they reach the CDC and are allowed in by scientist Edwin Jenner. The building self-destructs, and T-Dog barely escapes with the others.

Development and reception

IronE Singleton, who played T-Dog, recalled being told he would do two or three episodes but stayed for three seasons. He found it liberating to play a role not based on a comic character, as it allowed him to create the character's history. Singleton did not discuss development with Robert Kirkman, Frank Darabont, or Glen Mazzara, so T-Dog's backstory largely mirrored Singleton's own: growing up in the projects, attending college on a football scholarship, majoring in speech communications, and working a blue-collar or white-collar job after not making it to professional sports.

Reception of the character was mixed. Leonard Pierce of The A.V. Club, reviewing 'Guts', wrote that Singleton was 'wildly overacting' and that T-Dog 'isn't much more than a clown'. IGN's Eric Goldman called T-Dog one of the new characters created for the show who were 'either overdone or completely un-engaging' in the first season. Criticisms included a lack of character development and dialogue, particularly in the second season, while praise was directed at Singleton's performance, increased dialogue in the third season, and the heroic nature of T-Dog's death.
