Appearances
Lydia was a member of the Whisperers who followed Paul "Jesus" Monroe, Daryl, and two other guards. Jesus captured her and locked her in a cell beside Carl's. She tried to get information about Hilltop by talking to Carl, and they started a sexual relationship. After the war against the Whisperers, she joined Rick's group and lived through the rest of the story. Carl's unresolved feelings for Sophia ended their romance, but they stayed close friends.
Lydia survived the early days of the apocalypse with her parents, Alpha and Frank. Twenty-three days after the outbreak, they hid in a moldy basement with other survivors. After Frank died, Alpha raised Lydia harshly, treating her like a servant and making her call her "Alpha" instead of "momma." Later, Daryl Dixon and Michonne captured Lydia and kept her prisoner at Hilltop, where she bonded with Henry.
They fell in love, and she rejected the Whisperers to join the other communities, which gave her asylum. Her mother disowned her. Alpha later killed Henry and several other Hilltop residents. In the episode "Dee," set between flashbacks in "Omega" and "We Are the End of the World," Lydia and her mother lived on a steamboat run by a woman named Brooke.
Lydia was nearly nine and grew close to Brooke, but she feared her mother, Dee, because Dee had murdered her father Frank. Dee saw Brooke as a bad influence and had a harsher view of the world, though she tried to be a good person. When Dee reacted violently to a suspicious bartender named Billy, Lydia hid, recalling bad memories. Billy later returned to take the boat, and Dee escaped to shore with Lydia as a fight destroyed both sides.
Development and reception
Cassady McClincy portrays Lydia on The Walking Dead beginning with the ninth season, first appearing in the episode "Adaptation." Erik Kain of Forbes reviewed "Chokepoint" and stated that Lydia's relationship with Henry appeared to have developed too quickly. Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment reviewed "The Storm," noting that McClincy has done a lot with a character who could have come off poorly. Alex McLevy of The A.V. Club commented that Alpha's daughter has been a surprisingly strong presence due to McClincy's performance, which located the raw-wound heart of the character.
