Siddiq (The Walking Dead)
A survivor whose rescue by Carl Grimes costs Carl his life.
Siddiq is a fictional character appearing in both the comic book series The Walking Dead and its television adaptation, where actor Avi Nash played the role.
In the comics, Siddiq is part of a construction crew that arrives during a two-year time skip. At the fair, he leads the effort to build rooms for newcomers.
The character also appears in the video game The Walking Dead: Michonne, set before his comic debut. There, he works as a crew member on the ship Companion under Captain Pete, alongside Berto and Oak. Regardless of player choices, Siddiq survives the game.
On the television series, Siddiq first appears in the season 8 premiere "Mercy." He surrenders to Carl, saying he hasn't eaten in days. When Carl aims a gun at him, Siddiq tries to calm him, but Rick arrives and fires warning shots, scaring Siddiq away. Later, Carl leaves two cans of food with a note reading "Sorry," and Siddiq watches from the bushes as Carl leaves.
In "The King, the Widow, and Rick," Carl encounters Siddiq while scavenging, apologizes for Rick's hostility, and offers food and water. Noticing Siddiq trapping a walker, Carl asks him Rick's three questions—how many walkers killed, how many people killed, and why—and is impressed by his answers. Carl decides to lead Siddiq to Alexandria, promising to vouch for him. On the way, they are attacked by walkers; some pin Carl down, but he appears uninjured, and they continue.
In the mid-season finale "How It's Gotta Be," Carl sneaks Siddiq into Alexandria, and they wait in the sewers with other survivors during a Savior attack. Carl reveals he was bitten while bringing Siddiq to Alexandria. Siddiq watches as Rick and Michonne sit with Carl and cry.
In the mid-season premiere "Honor," a flashback shows Carl hiding his bite and ensuring Siddiq has quarters in the sewers. Siddiq tells Carl he was a medical resident and gives him medicine. After Carl kills himself, Siddiq vows to honor him by proving Carl's choice to save him mattered. In "Dead or Alive Or," Daryl, Rosita, Tara, and Siddiq lead survivors from the destroyed Alexandria to Hilltop, avoiding Savior patrols.
Dwight helps guide them, though others remain cautious. They cross a swamp, with Daryl, Rosita, and Siddiq clearing walkers. Later, Maggie allows captive Saviors limited rations and supervised time; Siddiq offers his services as a doctor. In "Do Not Send Us Astray," as Hilltop prepares for a Savior attack, Siddiq visits the infirmary.
During the attack, he aids injured Tobin, and Rick nearly kills Siddiq, mistaking him for a Savior. The next day, Siddiq offers to treat Rick's wound and consoles him about Carl's death, but Rick refuses sympathy and walks off. After the wounded reanimate and attack, Siddiq checks on Savior prisoners and struggles with walker prisoners; Alden saves him. In "Worth," Siddiq is seen at the infirmary.
In the season finale "Wrath," as Rick and company prepare their offensive, Rick tends to baby Gracie and encounters Siddiq. Rick asks how Carl was bitten; Siddiq explains Carl was bitten while honoring Siddiq's mother, someone he never knew. During the fight, Rick wounds Negan but tells Siddiq to save him, announcing they will start a new world.
In season 9's "A New Beginning," Siddiq joins a supply search in an abandoned Washington, D.C., museum, where a spider-filled walker attacks him, and he confesses his arachnophobia. After finding a wooden car and agricultural machinery, he helps pass the car over a glass floor containing many walkers. On the return trip, a storm blocks a bridge, forcing them to find another route. The car gets stuck in mud as walkers approach. After freeing the vehicle, Siddiq watches in horror as Ken is bitten and succumbs to the infection. In "The Bridge," Siddiq trains Enid in medicine as she recovers from injuries, and he observes Cyndie's hand sutures. Noticing Enid's progress, he proposes to Rick that Enid become the group's nurse while he returns to Alexandria to help there. In "Warning Signs," in Alexandria's infirmary...

Development and reception
Siddiq is portrayed by Avi Nash on The Walking Dead television series. Greg Nicotero explained the significance of Siddiq's first appearance in the season eight premiere 'Mercy' to Entertainment Weekly, noting why Rick is heard saying 'My mercy prevails over my wrath' in one of the layered timelines of the episode. Nicotero stated that Siddiq says that line to Carl in the gas station when talking about his mother and a traveler, quoting something his mother said, and that this could indicate as many as four timelines in the episode.
The Hollywood Reporter asked actor Chandler Riggs if his character Carl died a hero in 'How It's Gotta Be' for sacrificing his life to save Siddiq, someone he did not know. Riggs replied that he definitely thought so, but that it was about saving all of Alexandria, not just Siddiq, because Carl stalled the Saviors and led them away from the Alexandrians with smoke grenades. Riggs also joked with Entertainment Weekly that Carl's death 'was all Siddiq's mom's fault'.
In the season finale 'Wrath', Siddiq finally tells Rick that Carl was bitten while trying to honor Siddiq's mother. Erik Kain of Forbes commented that the scene between Siddiq and Rick should have happened two episodes earlier, calling it fine but out of place. Nash was promoted to series regular for season 9.
