Greene family farm

Background

Hershel's children are introduced on the farm. Shawn, the oldest son, was the first of the family killed by zombies, and Hershel kept him locked in the barn hoping for a cure until he escaped and killed his brother Arnold, the loyal second son; Hershel shot both. Lacey, the eldest daughter who shared her love of reading with Carol, died to the barn zombies trying to save Arnold. Billy, the brash youngest son and the group's best shot after Andrea, had a one-night stand with Carol before her suicide and was killed in the final stages of the Woodbury Army's assault on the prison, a loss that led his father to let himself die as well. The youngest twins Rachel and Susie were decapitated by Thomas when alone in the prison barbershop.

Maggie is Hershel's tomboyish second-oldest daughter and Glenn's lover, later his wife and then his widow. She takes on the role of surrogate mother to Sophia Peletier after the suicide of the girl's biological mother, Carol. After Glenn's death she moves with Sophia to the Hilltop Colony, where she overthrows Gregory as leader by outing him as a coward who sided with the man who murdered Glenn, and she becomes the Hilltop's de facto leader, sending reinforcements to save Alexandria's civilians in the war against the Saviors. Two years after the war Gregory, plotting with other parents, manages to poison her, and when the Hilltop is attacked in the Whisperer War she leads the survivors to Alexandria.

The farm's neighbours join the story too. Otis, Patricia's boyfriend, accidentally shoots and nearly kills Carl while hunting a deer; he follows the Greenes to the prison, is saved by the newly arrived Michonne, and dies when zombies temporarily overrun the prison. The naïve Patricia tries to free Thomas, is talked into helping the inmates' coup, regains acceptance by saving Rick's life with a blood transfusion and is shot by a Woodbury soldier in the final assault on the prison.
