Milton Mamet

Scientist and conflicted ally of the Governor.

Milton Mamet is a fictional character from the American television series The Walking Dead, played by Dallas Roberts. He does not appear in the comic book series. A scientist and one of the Governor’s top lieutenants, Milton knew Phillip Blake before he became the Governor, making him one of the few long-term associates from before the apocalypse. Although he works for the Governor, Milton is disturbed by his brutality.

In Season 3, Milton examines the severed heads of Michonne’s walker-pets, explaining to the Governor that she removed their arms and teeth to prevent attacks and used them to move unseen among walkers. He later helps corral captive walkers, protected by duct tape wrapped around his sleeves when one tries to bite him. With Andrea’s help, Milton experiments on a dying man named Mr. Coleman, asking him emotionally charged questions before death to see if any human consciousness remains after reanimation; the test fails, and Andrea saves Milton from being bitten.

Milton questions Andrea about injuries from the prison group’s attack and tries to calm Woodbury’s residents. The Governor orders him to watch Andrea, but Milton later helps her escape to negotiate peace with Rick. At a peace summit, Milton learns the Governor plans to kill everyone at the prison except Michonne, whom he intends to torture. Milton then commands Andrea to flee to the prison and burns the Governor’s captive walkers, directly opposing him. The Governor realizes Milton betrayed him.

In the season finale, the Governor beats Milton severely and orders him to kill Andrea, who is tied to a chair. Milton instead tries to stab the Governor but is fatally wounded. Before dying, Milton secretly leaves pliers behind Andrea’s chair so she can free herself, and tells her to stab him in the head before he reanimates. As he dies, he asks why she returned from the prison, and she admits she tried to assassinate the Governor. Andrea cannot free herself in time, and a zombified Milton bites her. Rick’s group finds them, and Andrea kills herself to avoid turning.

The character was announced by Entertainment Weekly in August 2012. Robert Kirkman called Milton the “details guy,” and noted his closeness to the Governor. Dallas Roberts said Milton’s weapon of choice would be a slingshot. Critics described him as the Governor’s “pet scientist,” and noted that his experiment with Mr. Coleman revealed more about Milton’s own character than about the zombies.

Character biography

Milton Mamet is a scientist and a longtime associate of the Governor, having known Phillip Blake before the apocalypse. He serves as one of the Governor's key advisors, but he is unsettled by Philip's brutality. In "Walk with Me," Milton examines the headless bodies of Michonne's walker-pets and explains to the Governor that she removed their arms and teeth to prevent them from attacking, using them as camouflage among other walkers. In "Say the Word," he helps corral captured walkers and avoids a bite because he had wrapped duct tape around his jacket sleeves.

In "When the Dead Come Knocking," Milton, with Andrea's help, experiments on whether the undead retain any human consciousness. He asks emotionally charged questions to Mr. Michael Coleman Sr., a volunteer dying of prostate cancer, hoping that after Coleman reanimates, he might show signs of understanding or emotional response to those questions. In "Made to Suffer," Milton attends the Woodbury military meeting and later visits the clinic after the Governor loses an eye to Michonne.

In "The Suicide King," he asks Andrea for the number of casualties from the prison group's attack and attempts to soothe the frightened townspeople. In "Home," the Governor instructs Milton to monitor Andrea. In "I Ain't a Judas," Milton aids Andrea in escaping to negotiate peace with Rick.

Development and reception

Milton Mamet was first introduced to the public through an Entertainment Weekly report on August 21, 2012. Robert Kirkman called him the "details guy," and he shares a close bond with the Governor. According to actor Dallas Roberts, if Milton were to carry a weapon, it would probably be a slingshot. In his review of "Walk with Me" for The A.V. Club, Zack Handlen labeled Milton the Governor's "pet scientist."

Handlen later described the zombie-killing scene between Merle and Milton in "Say the Word" as an "alpha-male game." In his review of "When the Dead Come Knocking," Handlen focused on Milton's experiment with Mr. Coleman, a man dying of prostate cancer. Milton tries to condition Coleman with a set of questions, hoping to see if any consciousness remains after he turns. The experiment fails, and Andrea has to save Milton from being attacked.

Handlen pointed out that the scene reveals more about Milton than about the undead. Though the Governor's people know that any death leads to reanimation, they have not truly accepted this reality. Milton spends weeks on this project, and the sadness is clear when Coleman recites the names of his lost family. But what stands out most is how Milton and the Governor still believe they can control the apocalypse.

They treat it as just another problem for humanity to solve, a kind of dangerous optimism that Handlen suggests makes Woodbury's survival impossible.
