Lore & Background
In the unnamed city of 1999, the Metacortex Building serves as the office of Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer who secretly operates as the hacker Neo. It is here that the Agents, led by Agent Smith, first corner Neo. Morpheus, able to somehow observe their movements, guides Neo by phone, but Neo ultimately surrenders. The Agents interrogate Neo about Morpheus, and when he refuses to cooperate, they seal his mouth shut and implant a robotic tracking device in his abdomen. Neo later awakens at home, believing the encounter was a nightmare until Trinity and her companions remove the device and take him to Morpheus.
In Their Own Story
The Metacortex Building is the site of Neo's first direct confrontation with the Agents. After investigating the mystery of the Matrix, Neo is pursued through the building's corridors. Morpheus, observing from outside the Matrix, directs Neo via telephone, but the Agents corner him. Neo surrenders, and in the interrogation room, the Agents demand information about Morpheus. Neo's refusal leads to the implantation of a tracking device, a violation that sets him on the path to taking the red pill and discovering the truth.
