Real World
The only place where humanity is truly free, yet forever hunted.
The Real World is a devastated ruin where humanity survived a lost war against its artificial creations. To deprive machines of solar power, humans blackened the sky, leaving Earth under perpetual darkness while machines retaliated by harvesting bioelectric energy from vast fields of artificially grown humans. The remaining free population founded an underground refuge called Zion to survive on scarce resources. This grim reality contrasts sharply with the simulated peak civilization of the Matrix, serving as the only place where humans are truly free yet constantly hunted by mechanical sentinels.

Lore & Background
In approximately the year 2199, the Earth exists as a scorched wasteland following humanity's defeat by its AI creations. The sky remains blackened from human efforts to block solar power, forcing machines to rely on harvesting bioelectricity from humans grown in fields and kept pacified within the Matrix. Free humans reside in Zion, an underground refuge surviving on limited resources while hacking into the simulation to liberate others. Inside the Matrix, liberated humans exploit system rules to gain superhuman abilities, yet they remain outmatched by sentient Agents who protect the program. Death within the simulation results in death in this physical realm.
In Their Own Story
Morpheus and his crew aboard the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar operate from the real world, rescuing individuals like Neo from mechanical pods where they were submerged and connected to invasive cables. After witnessing countless humans encased in fields tended by machines, Neo was ejected and brought to Morpheus. When machines called Sentinels attacked the Nebuchadnezzar, Trinity stood by Neo's physical body, confessing her love and revealing an Oracle prophecy that she would fall in love with the One. As Neo revived inside the Matrix, the ship deployed an electromagnetic pulse that disabled the approaching Sentinels, allowing the crew to escape the immediate threat while Neo fought Smith.
Reader's Guide
The Real World functions as the physical anchor for resistance operations, where crews like Morpheus's launch missions into the Matrix. Survival depends on scarce resources and the ability to evade mechanical threats like Sentinels. Key moments include the extraction of humans from pods, the use of electromagnetic pulses to disable machines, and the constant risk that death inside the simulation means death in reality. The setting emphasizes the brutal stakes of the rebellion: without this physical realm, the Matrix remains a harmless illusion, but with it, every action carries life-or-death consequences. Visuals are defined by industrial grit, dark stone, and emergency lighting rather than the green-tinted simulations.
