The Real World is a devastated ruin where humanity survived a lost war against its artificial creations. To deprive machines of solar power, humans blackened the sky, leaving Earth under perpetual darkness while machines retaliated by harvesting bioelectric energy from vast fields of artificially grown humans. The remaining free population founded an underground refuge called Zion to survive on scarce resources. This grim reality contrasts sharply with the simulated peak civilization of the Matrix, serving as the only place where humans are truly free yet constantly hunted by mechanical sentinels.

In approximately the year 2199, the Earth exists as a scorched wasteland following humanity's defeat by its AI creations.
