Cypher

Cypher (played by Joe Pantoliano) is a central character in The Matrix whose regret at being 'unplugged' drives a fatal betrayal of the Nebuchadnezzar crew. Unlike his comrades who fought for humanity's liberation, Cypher longed to return to the simulation with no memory of his time outside. During the film's climax he murders fellow crew members to complete an exchange with the Agents: Morpheus for reinsertion into the Matrix with no memory of his time outside it.

Cypher's arc begins with deep regret over leaving the Matrix. While other crew members accepted their reality in Zion, Cypher viewed his existence there as a burden. He actively sought a deal to be inserted back into the simulation, negotiating terms that would erase his memory of the real world entirely. In exchange for giving up Morpheus to the Agents, he was promised reinsertion into the Matrix with no memory of the real world. This decision marked him as a traitor, driven by a desire to escape the gray reality of human survival in favor of a fabricated existence. During his betrayal, he leads Mouse into a trap in which Mouse is killed by the police, blasts Dozer and Tank with a lightning rifle, and unplugs Switch and Apoc; as he is about to kill Neo and Trinity, a critically injured Tank kills him.
