Lore & Background

The Keymaker exists as an "Exile," a program that opted to hide within the Matrix rather than face deletion after its original utility ceased. He is held captive by the Merovingian, a dangerous Exile who guards him tightly. His role becomes critical when the Oracle informs Neo that he needs the Keymaker's assistance to reach the Source, the machine mainframe. When Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity attempt to demand his release, they are initially rebuffed by the Merovingian. However, Persephone, the Merovingian's wife, betrays her husband and guides them to a small room where the Keymaker toils over a key-cutting machine, surrounded by thousands of previously made keys hanging in bunches on the walls.

In Their Own Story

After being freed from captivity, the Keymaker flees with Morpheus and Trinity while being pursued by the Merovingian's Twins, police, and three Agents sent to terminate him. During this high-stakes chase onto city freeways, he provides immediate assistance by handing Trinity an ignition key for a motorcycle, saving her the time of waiting for hot-wiring instructions to upload into her mind. Following the escape, he meets with three crews of Zion rebels to detail security measures around the building housing the door to the Source: two electric power stations must be shut down simultaneously to disable alarms, and only Neo can open the door without triggering explosives. Later, inside a hall filled with doors representing backdoor access, they are interrupted by Agent Smith and his copies. The Keymaker opens a door for Neo and Morpheus to take cover but sustains fatal gunshot wounds. Before dying, he gives Neo the specific key on a chain needed to reach the Source.
