According to the Architect, The Previous Ones were created by the System to handle the accumulation of human deviation. Each time Zion grew large enough to threaten the Matrix, the machines destroyed it and the One was reunited with the Source to reboot the Matrix. This cycle allowed humanity to survive without threatening the machines. Unlike Neo, these predecessors followed the expected path dictated by logic. Each of them chose to reload the Matrix and was then allowed to rebuild Zion with twenty-three freed humans, sixteen women and seven men.
