This short film bridges the narrative gap between the first and second feature films by explaining how Zion became aware of the machine threat. The crew of the hovercraft Osiris discovers an army of Sentinels and sees the machines using gigantic drills to tunnel down to Zion. Fleeing into an uncharted tunnel, the ship emerges on the surface four kilometers directly above Zion, close to the Sentinel army, which detects and pursues it. The story highlights the brutal reality of the war outside the simulation.

Unlike the digital battles seen within the Matrix, this conflict involves physical destruction and high-stakes tactical combat against Sentinels. Captain Thadeus decides that Zion must be warned, and Jue volunteers to broadcast herself into the Matrix to deliver the warning. Ultimately, the Osiris serves as a sacrificial beacon. Inside the Matrix, Jue drops a package into a mailbox before the Osiris is overrun by Sentinels and explodes, killing the entire crew.

This act solidifies the connection between the physical survival of humanity and the events to come in The Matrix Reloaded.

Reader's Guide

The short opens with Captain Thadeus and Jue in a blindfolded sword fight in a virtual-reality dojo, interrupted by an alarm. The Osiris, heading for Junction 21, detects an army of Sentinels; the ship flees into an uncharted tunnel, destroys a Sentinel patrol and surfaces four kilometers above Zion, where the crew sees the machines drilling down toward the city. Pursued by the Sentinel army, Thadeus makes a last stand while Jue enters the Matrix to deliver the warning; the Osiris explodes, destroying many Sentinels and killing the entire crew.
