Bane (played by Ian Bliss) serves as a crew member of the Zion hovercraft Caduceus in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. His role shifts dramatically when his consciousness is overwritten by Smith, allowing the Agent to take control of Bane's body in the real world. Originally part of the human resistance, he becomes the vessel for Smith after an encounter within the Matrix simulation. This possession enables Smith to operate outside the digital realm, turning a loyal ally into a deadly threat capable of assassinating Neo and sabotaging the defense of Zion from within.

Lore & Background
Bane begins as a crew member aboard the Caduceus. During events in The Matrix Reloaded, his consciousness is overwritten by Smith while inside the Matrix. This allows Smith to take physical control of Bane in the real world without needing to jack into a ship. In this possessed state, Bane attempts to assassinate Neo but is stopped by a character known as the Kid. He later tries to convince Captain Ballard to search for the Nebuchadnezzar, but his request is rebuffed. The Caduceus is subsequently sent to the front lines to defend against machine attacks.
In Their Own Story
While serving on the Caduceus, Bane's body becomes the host for Smith. He attempts to kill Neo but fails when the Kid intervenes. Later, he tries to persuade Captain Ballard to look for the Nebuchadnezzar, only to be turned down. The ship is deployed to the front lines where Bane pre-emptively detonates an EMP device. This action disables all hovercraft, leaving the human crews defenseless against a machine massacre. As the sole survivor of this event, he is found unconscious by the Mjolnir. He then kills a crew member named Maggie and stows away aboard the Logos just before Neo and Trinity depart for the machine city.
