One For All was created when two separate Quirks merged due to the interference of the villain All For One. The Quirk grants the ability to stockpile raw power and transfer it to a successor. The seventh holder, Toshinori Yagi, known as All Might, used this accumulated might to become the world's greatest hero and the Symbol of Peace. However, the immense strain of the power eventually ravaged his body, forcing him to seek a worthy heir. He chose Izuku Midoriya, a Quirkless boy who dreamed of becoming a hero, after witnessing his selfless attempt to save Bakugo. Midoriya underwent nearly a year of physical training before receiving the Quirk and passing U.A.'s Entrance Exam by saving Ochaco Uraraka. As the ninth holder, Midoriya later awakened the ability to communicate with the vestiges of the previous users and slowly acquire all of their individual Quirks, such as Blackwhip and Fa Jin.

In Their Own Story

The story of One For All begins when All Might, injured by the villain All For One, witnesses Izuku Midoriya attempt to save Katsuki Bakugo from a villain. Recognizing Midoriya's potential, All Might chooses him to inherit his Quirk. After nearly a year of physical training, Midoriya becomes the ninth holder and passes U.A.'s Entrance Exam. During a battle exercise against Class 1-B, Midoriya awakens One For All mid-fight against Neito Monoma, gaining the ability to communicate with the vestiges of the previous users and slowly acquire all of their Quirks. Later, Midoriya and All Might reveal the truth about One For All to Class 1-A, and Midoriya leaves U.A. to hunt escaped villains, leading him to physical and emotional ruin. Class 1-A intervenes to bring him back to U.A., which has become a refugee camp.
