Smoke

The Lin Kuei ninja who escapes cyborg conversion with his soul intact.

Smoke debuted in Mortal Kombat II as a hidden opponent who gives off smoke and drops clues on how to fight him. Mortal Kombat 3 made him playable as a Lin Kuei assassin and ally of Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero. When the clan began turning its best warriors into cyborgs, Smoke was captured and converted and sent to hunt his friend.

Lore & Background

With Kuai Liang's help he finds that he still has his soul and helps defeat the cyborgs Cyrax and Sektor, before Shao Kahn's forces capture him. In Deception Noob Saibot reactivates and reprograms him as the template for an army, and in Armageddon he joins Saibot's attack on a Lin Kuei temple. The 2011 reboot makes him Tomas Vrbada, a Czech Lin Kuei member who can turn into smoke; Raiden saves him from conversion, but Sindel kills him and Quan Chi revives him as a revenant. In Mortal Kombat 1 Tomas is the adopted brother of Bi-Han and Kuai Liang, has no supernatural powers but practical magic, and helps Kuai Liang found the Shirai Ryu after Bi-Han sides with Shang Tsung.

Reader's Guide

His MK3 'Earth Detonation' Fatality is often singled out by critics for how outlandish it is. He appears in the cartoon Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm and in Mortal Kombat Annihilation, where Liu Kang kills him.
